Unisex Easy-Bake oven on the way
Hasbro says it will begin selling gender-neutral Easy-Bake ovens after meeting with a 13-year-old New Jersey girl who had campaigned for them.
McKenna Pope, of Garfield, N.J., got more than 40,000 signatures on her online petition at Change.org.
She began her campaign after finding only pink or purple Easy-Bake ovens. She wanted to buy ovens in other colors as a Christmas gift for her four-year-old brother, Gavyn Boscio.
McKenna said Hasbro is doing everything she wanted, including featuring boys in ads for the toy. “They really met most or even all of what I wanted them to do, and they really amazed me,” she said, adding that her brother Gavyn thought the new design was “awesome.”
Never doubt the ability of 13-year-old girls to change the world.
Here’s what I don’t understand: who says pink is a girl’s color anyway? :| Isn’t this just backwards thinking, unintentionally encouraging the idea that there’s a difference between girl and boy? Why do we need to change the design? Why not just show girls AND boys playing with the toys on the packaging? Just doesn’t make sense.
I remember wanting one of these as a kid but they didn’t let me have one because they were “for girls”.

Nope. I still like this idea. Even if you stop thinking of pink as a “girl color”. Making Easy Bake ovens in different colors or a neutral stereotypically genderless color keeps things simple. I hate pink. Always have. That was the sole reason I didn’t want an Easy Bake oven. I didn’t want to look at that monstrous pink microwave thing every time I wanted a cupcake from it. The color is quite honestly really fucking nauseating. If they make them different colors it more or less eliminates that issue. I totally support them making them less noxious colors. Saying it’s gender neutral helps boys feel more comfortable about wanting and getting one. And why shouldn’t they? I mean…I don’t know any boys - or men for that matter - who don’t like baked goods. The only reason they don’t want to make that shit themselves is because they’ve grown up thinking baking is for girls.
If I ever make the horrible mistake of having a child and it turns out to be a boy and he decides mommy is his baking machine I’m going to whip one of these things out, sit it in front of him and be like, “Nah bitch. You bake that shit yourself.”
